The True Meaning of Evil

Evil and religion have long gone hand in hand. Many people in the Dark Ages were picked out as evil, for being witches or changelings. Evil in its strictest original definition does not just mean very bad, it means very bad according to God.

But historically, what is meant by evil according to God? ...it really meant, evil as interpreted by a priest, who claims to be in direct contact with God. These priests had great control over the masses, through instilling fear and guilt, for any apparent transgression that may inflame God's wrath. Of course in the Dark Ages, the burdensome worry of being accused of witchcraft, by a gossipy neighbor, instilled fear in itself, the fear of not just being executed, but a 'nice bit' of torture too.

Of course it is rather convenient, if one is seeking a 'little bit' of power over the masses, of none thinking dupes, if you can get them to believe that the words spoken by Church masters, are directly communicated to them by God.

How many Bishops, Popes Cardinals et al, I wonder, are really closet atheists? I am not the first to ponder this question. It has long been suggested by many reasonable thinkers, that many of the priests of the church, could not possibly be so benighted, with religious mysticism, as they claim to be. Nobody with a mind so fully inculcated with mysticism, could possibly hold onto such power, or could they?

...But then again, the 9/11 hijackers were not none thinking dupes, master programmed, with no thoughts of their own. They were all highly educated and came from families of doctors and engineers. Thus, perhaps one could assume it is possible, to be a mystical minded religious martyr on one hand and highly educated on the other. If this is possible, perhaps it is possible for a pope to compartmentalize too.

The ability of church leaders, to apparently communicate directly with God, is not just a claim out of antiquity. The Catholic Church in the name of the Pope, apparently has the ability to communicate directly with God on a regular basis. Not only does he claim to do so, but he does so, to an often heinous and inhumanely devastating effect. It has long been an edict of the Catholic Church, under the orders of the Pope, that condom use is an evil and sinful transgression against God...

Once one starts defining evil, in terms of religious edicts and once individuals start following those edicts, as if they were pronouncements of the one and only truth, then people often do suffer, even to the point of dying. When individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa, who have been overtaken by an AIDS epidemic, have no other means to knowledge, other than that coming out of the Catholic Church, pronouncing the immorality of condom use. Then the Catholic Church must be held accountable, for widespread suffering and death.

By the same token, when the Christian Right in America, consistently drive to prevent Stem Cell research, because they believe every cell contains a soul, then that belief too, is evil (I'm now using evil, in its more modern definition... evil as in morally indefensible).

When suicide bombers, fly planes into buildings, because they think they are killing infidels and by doing so, will be granted their place in paradise with 72 virgins, this is evil.

Any belief, that is held as true, purely on faith. Whether that faith is held as a belief of direct communication with God, or an indirect communication through a Pope in the Vatican, a Mullah in Iran, a Rabbi in Israel, a Pastor in America, a Bishop in England etc, any such belief, is evil, it is so, because it stultifies reasonable thinking. This is how to define evil, it is that which manipulates the minds of individuals and leads them to irrational acts, that hurt or kill others and it is always done at the expense of reason.

Of course evil to religious leaders has a different meaning. Evil to such leaders, is any act which goes against their edicts and pronouncements. Evil is anything that weakens their power and control. It has been a convenient ploy of priests of the church to keep the population gullible and ignorant, only in ignorance can such leaders hold onto their power. But in much of the World, the church has lost its grip. It is hard to keep the masses ignorant, in the age of digital communication.

Is Fear a Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

All of us have natural fears. It is unlikely that any of us would survive even one day, without the ability to experience the emotion of fear, even in modern society, our fear keeps us alive. One of the reasons we can cross a busy main road, without being run over, is because of our ability to fear being knocked down by a vehicle. From this perspective we can understand fear as a necessary, inherited trait of our Darwinian past.

No primitive ancestor of ours, could have survived the jaws of a Saber Tooth Tiger, if they had no fear response to such predators. A car traveling at 50 miles per hour is, I guess one could say, a modern day equivalent of a 'saber tooth tiger'.

This kind of fear, that protects us from real potential danger, is of course necessary, for our survival in the every day World.

There is however, an artificial kind of fear, that is instilled in us, based not on any real danger within the World. But rather, these fears are instilled in us, based on mystical premises, that cannot be objectively defined within reality.

Children are particularly vulnerable to irrational fears, which are instilled in their minds by adults. Indeed, from a young age, all of us are bombarded with images and stories of ghosts, gremlins, devils, witches and all kinds of monsters lurking in dark corners. Of course, a good percentage of us grow out of such beliefs, but there are many adults, who still believe in ghosts, witches, devils, gremlins and monsters. Indeed, there are believe it or not, adults who believe in fairies and angels.

While we live in a society, where parents, usually unknowingly and seemingly 'innocently', instill fears in their children, then we will always live in a society that is partially entrenched in irrational fears. These fears just get passed on from one generation to the next. These fears of course, are also entrenched in the media, and get implanted in our minds in a fuzzy colidoscope of sublimation; while we are in this subjective stupour, our mental facililty to grasp reality, rots in a quagmire of mysticism.

I think it is, most definitely better to be loved than feared. It is most important that your children grow up loving and not fearing you. The best place to start, in instilling a loving relationship with your children, is in being honest about the reality in which they exist and openly telling them, there are no such things as ghosts, witches and monsters... Except of course the 'monsters' in real life; the bad people, who do monstrous things to other people.

The young child mind, is courageously involved in the mental struggle of understanding the universe, in which it finds itself. There is nothing healthy, in stultifying that mental growth, with irrational mystical beliefs, such as ghosts, witches, gremlins and monsters and indeed, perhaps the most irrational concept every erected in the mind of man, the God concept.

So the answer to the question... 'Is it better to be loved or feared?' - I would say: that a World filled with a little more love (the more the better), would naturally, be a less fearful World and a better World for all of us.

Reason is Directly Related to Objectivity

Reason is directly related to objectivity. To be a reasonable individual one has to objectively define one's environment and their place within that environment. The ability to be reasonable is the ability to objectively define reality. The unreasonable individual is so, because that individualhas chosen to act non-objectively or subjectively. Unreasonable behavior stems from detachment of reality and an inability to objectively define reality.

Just as reason is related to an objective mind-set; unreason is its opposite and is related to a subjective mind-set. Unreasonable behavior in its more "honest" form is based around ignorance of the facts of reality. Thus, many individuals, simply because they don't know any better, live in honest ignorance. Ignorance is a breeding ground for faulty thinking that detaches individuals from reality and the ability to objectively define themselves, others and the environment in which they live. Such individuals live their lives in a semi-conscious stupor, unable to grasp important aspects of reality.

The unreasonable individual does very little original thinking. Such individuals simply blindly follow the masses ...and because a high percentage of those masses are also in a none thinking semi-conscious stupor, we end up with a society of air headed non-thinking fools. Where the blind truly do end up, leading the blind.

Unreason is built upon the foundations of mysticism and mysticism comes in all shapes and sizes. There are believers in God, UFOs, witches, telekinesis, ghosts, fairies, vampires, the yeti, the loch ness monster - et al. All such beliefs poison the mind with pockets of mysticism andmysticism is the catalyst that allows unreasonable non-objective thinking to take hold.

The mystical orientated mind is the antithesis of the reasoning mind. To the degree that one's mind is distorted with anti-reality mysticism, is the degree by which one becomes mentally detached from reality.

The fact that many men and women live their lives in a mental haze, detached from reality; might draw one to the conclusion that there is a relationship between mysticism and intelligence. This is not so, mystical infection has little to do with IQ. One can be a highly intelligent mystic. As just one example, many highly intelligent individuals become indoctrinated with religious mysticism .

So, what causes the mysticism that leads to irrational unreasonable thinking? ...Many individuals are programmed with mysticism from an early age. When mothers and fathers, elders, teachers - et al; believe in God, ghosts, UFOs etc, then children will naturally grow up believing these things too; it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A child's mind is plastic an malleable, his or her mind will very rapidly mold to the contours of the external environment. When a child is told over and over that God exists, then that child is liable to grow up believing this "truth" as a fact of reality. Such mystically orientated minds are gullible to anti-reality ideas; unreasonable subjective ideas that are detached from the real World.

What we learn as young children molds and shapes our futures. The adults of today create the philosophers of tomorrow. What children learn today guides their philosophical outlook on life in their future years. Every individual on the planet is guided by an internal philosophy of life an internal world view. That view is either held with conscious awareness and defined through long and hard objective reasoning; or it is an unintegrated junk heap of scattered ideas, buried in the
subconscious. Every now and again those ideas creep to the surface of the conscious mind. It is not surprising that individuals who have these thoughts running through their heads, often act unreasonably. They do so, because they have no conscious control over their thoughts and those thoughts are not integrated with external reality. If their thoughts about reality are arrived at non-objectively, then they have no way of fully grasping the reality of their external environment or indeed the nature of their own self.

One can cure the mind of mysticism. One can begin by honestly accepting objective reality and the laws of nature. One can come to terms with reality by consciously awakening to the fact that there are no Gods, ghosts, fairies, gremlins, monsters or whatever other anti-reality belief you have internalized as true, without objectively definable evidence.
